There are only three questions that matter when assessing the value of a person in the marketplace: “Who am I?”, “What can I do?”, and “How do I prove it?” These are the questions that ground people in the journey to self-awareness, confidence, and societal impact. These are the three questions Learn to Start uses as the foundation for its pedagogy and technology because we want every individual to leave the LTS program equipped with a unique value proposition and a portfolio that proves their value in the market.
By asking the question, “who am I?”, we are giving students the opportunity to build their story based on what drives them to learn, develop, and produce. It is the first question asked in every LTS classroom because we want every student to feel like an individual on their own path rather than part of a multitude all striving for the same end goal. The institution of education demands every student learns and develops at the same pace with the same knowledge and skills all competing for the same spots in higher education. K-12 education should be a place of individual development that allows every student to see a path for themselves towards economic independence, purposeful higher and vocational education, and marketplace fit based on passions and abilities.
The question, “who am I?” does not have a right or wrong answer. It cannot be graded according to a standard rubric. It is a lifelong question that demands iteration based on the knowledge and skills that come from real-world immersion and experience. It is also a question that should be asked from the beginning of the educational experience so students are equipped with a lens that gives them perspective on their own identity and how they can shape that identity into a story that resonates with specific groups of people. LTS participants discover themselves and begin developing their true potential, as they learn how to communicate their value, always aligned with their authentic story. When was the last time you asked yourself “who am I?” Your answer should be today.
