Alumni Spotlight – Carly Siegel

Learn to Start is proud to be working with the next generation of lower, middle, and high school students in reimagining what the 21st-century education system should look like. Hear from one of LTS’s incredible alumni, Carly Siegel, as she answers Learn to Start’s 3 essential questions and shares how LTS has impacted her personal and professional life since graduating from the program.

Who are you?

My name is Carly Siegel, and I am currently a senior at the University of Arizona pursuing a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. My ultimate goal is to become a news anchor.

What can you do?

I have skills in how to research and write stories, conduct interviews, edit audio, and video footage. With those skills, I have experienced live reporting, and writing scripts, which are preparing me for the role of becoming a reporter anchor.

How do you prove it?

I’m an anchor and make news packages for the student-run news station at The University of Arizona, UATV-3. I produce radio segments for NPR’s Arizona Public Media. I interned for Fox News’s Internship Program, specifically for Fox Nation’s Development Team.

Confidence

How has being in Learn To Start impacted your confidence as a person? Being part of Learn To Start impacted my confidence significantly. It was one of my first times as a young adult where I was pushed out of my comfort zone and able to prove myself wrong. As a freshman in high school, I lacked self- confidence. On the first day of Entrepreneurship. I was asked to stand in front of the class and ‘tell my story’. I doubted myself and didn’t think I would be taken seriously. However, after repeatedly being asked to speak in front of my class and pitch my company, I eventually was able to speak in front of all the Entrepreneurship classes, as well as professional entrepreneurs. By the end of the program, I was no longer the insecure freshman afraid of their own shadow. This experience showed me that challenging my self-doubts and fears helped me become a more confident person. Now, I’m more comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone, knowing that facing my fears will make me a stronger and better person in the long run.

Purpose

How has LTS defined or redefined purpose for you in your personal and professional life? LTS has redefined my purpose, both personally and professionally. It showed me I am capable of dedicating myself fully to something I am passionate about. The program gave me the freedom to create any type of company, allowing me to learn more about my work ethic and what I am drawn to as a person. I discovered that working on something I am passionate about with clear goals, gives me a strong drive and motivation in life. It also made me realize my love for public speaking and storytelling, which guided me to my current career path of becoming a news reporter.

Risk-taking

What was your experience with risk-taking before LTS vs after? How has LTS impacted your ability to take risks? Before LTS, I had very little experience in risk taking. I often stayed within my comfort zone because it felt easier and safer, and I was scared that I would disappoint myself or possibly be judged. However, during LTS, I learned that taking risks can only make me grow as a person. Failure is inevitable, but the lessons that come out of it can mold me into a stronger person. When building my company in LTS, there were many moments where I felt stuck or unsure of the next step. But by embracing risks and trying new approaches, the failures along the way actually lead to success of learning a lot about myself.
